TBED Organization NorTech Wins SSTI Innovation Award for Cluster Work

NorTech wins SSTI Innovation Award for Cluster Work – “NorTech, a regional nonprofit technology-based economic development organization serving 21 counties in Northeast Ohio, has tested its cluster model on two industry clusters – advanced energy and flexible electronics.” NorTech connects cluster members to resources and helps them commercialize their products, locate investors, access government funding, and form strategic partnerships. Its cluster approach in advanced energy and flexible electronics has supported companies that have attracted $20.5 million in capital, created 171 jobs and generated $10.8 million in payroll in Ohio over a one year period starting in July of 2010.

Renewable Energy/Clean Technology Supply Chain Pre‑Assessment Program (pdf) – This study by Kansas State University’s Advanced Manufacturing Institute  assists the south central Kansas region in developing a better understanding of the interest, capabilities and capacity of regional manufacturing companies in terms of their readiness to pursuerenewable energy markets (wind, solar and biomass). The purpose of the study was to provide business development pre-assessments to manufacturing companies seeking to 1) increase their connectedness to emerging renewable energy markets, 2) improve their operations and 3) increase their competitive advantage.

Seven States Selected to Develop Economic Strategies Focused on the Growth of Advanced Manufacturing Industries – The National Governors Association selected seven states to participate in the Policy Academy on “Making” our Future.   “A Policy Academy is a highly interactive, team-based process for helping a select number of states develop and implement an action plan to address a complex public policy issue. Participating states receive guidance and technical assistance from NGA staff, experts from MEP, EDA and State Science and Technology Institute, as well as consultants from the private sector, research organizations and academia. The strategies and policies developed by the selected states are intended to serve as ideas and best practices for all states.”

Rich Bendis: Creating Communities of Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Creating Communities of Innovation and Entrepreneurship – Rich Bendis’, President & CEO Innovation America, presented  at the AURP 2011 International Conference. Brendis seeks to move from Technology Based Economic Development (TBED) to Innovation Based Economic Development (IBED) and highlights how university research parks and private sector investment have led to the creation of regional innovation clusters. EDA i6 Challenge Winners Announced

On Thursday, September 23, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke  announced the winners of the i6 Challenge, a new $12 million innovation competition led by the U.S. Department ofCommerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA), in partnership with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

The i6 Challenge seeks to identify and support the nation’s best ideas for technology commercialization and entrepreneurship in six different regions of the country. The winning team from each region will receive $1 million from EDA to support their project and may be eligible for additional awards from NIH and NSF. Projects include efforts to drive innovative technologies in the medical and bioscience industries to market more quickly by bringing experts in science and academia together with public and private sector businesses and entrepreneurs.

Forbes.com Launches Interactive Migration Map

Using data from the Internal Revenue Service, Forbes.com recently launched an interactive mapping tool illustrating residential migrating patterns around the country.

More than 10 million Americans moved from one county to another during 2008.   Below is a visual representation of migrating patterns out of Cook County, Il (Chicago).

TARC Announces RFP for Revised CEDS Process

The Texas Association of Regional Councils (TARC) has recently announced two Requests for Proposals (RFPs) to assist with a statewide initiative for redeveloping the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) process. 

TARC is seeking to secure a contract to assist regional councils and economic development districts (EDDs) with the following:

  • Develop a web-based or software-based application to aid in the development of the  (CEDS) and required components of the CEDS;
  • Create an interactive Website for the CEDS incorporating valuable GIS features with both ad hoc and standardized report-generating abilities that assist EDDs in responding to requests for information from 1) businesses/industry, 2) units of government, 3) site selectors, and 4) workforce development entities;
  • Develop and acquire by lease and/or out-right purchase of web-based economic development data tools and software-based applications that assist regional councils and economic development districts (EDDs) in responding to requests for information from 1) businesses/industry, 2) units of government, 3) site selectors, and 4) workforce development entities. The economic development data tools and/or applications must be sustainable and offer access to timely, accurate and relevant data such as socioeconomic, demographic, workforce, business/industry and industry cluster data and provide the ability conduct forecasts of this data.

EDA CEDS Modernization Task Force – Slides Now Available

This afternoon NADO hosted a national conference call with EDA representatives Lynette Boswell and Hillary Sherman to discuss the recently comprised EDA Comprehensive Economic Development Strategies (CEDS) Modernization Task Force.

Following a brief presentation, EDDs and interested stakesholders from around the country provided input on how the CEDS process can be improved upon.  Attendees will be notified once notes from the conference call  are compiled and ready for distribution.

White House Releases Overview of Rural Economy

The President’s Council of Economic Advisor’s published a new report on America’s rural economy in April 2010.  The report examines:

  • economic landscape in rural America
  • economic competitiveness of U.S. agricultural sector
  • importance of infrastructure improvements
  • strategies for growing businesses and supporting entrepreneurs
  • investing in education and health care in rural communities

The issue brief notes the various roles played by federal agencies and programs in assisting local leaders in pursuing new economic opportunities.  It specifically mentions the role of the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) in infrastructure improvements, strategic planning and business development finance.

It also highlights the administration’s focus on regional innovation systems and cluster development, including the President’s FY2011 budget plans for a new regional innovation initiative within USDA and at EDA.
